Writing Update

07 October, 2011 - Posted by: Dianne

I understand why people keep telling me to stop counting. Still, it’s my choice, it is part fun and part encouragement. The closer I get to the milestone number the more enthused I am about getting there. The quality of my writing has not suffered from this. In fact, the opposite is true. My work has greatly improved becoming tighter, more focused, and polished; whichever term you’d like to ascribe.

Currently I have:

with Zodiac Prelude:
171 files remaining to compare, edit, and delete the unusable characters from.
10 characters to delete- I also edit these scenes to preserve the content my writing partner and I have created.
Yesterday I added 369 new words to the count. I am now 4,402 words away from 400,000.

Total story count: 64
Each script is at a different stage. Some are 'on hold', others are 'concepts'. This ones listed as 'CWIP' are the scripts I'm currently focused on. Of course it's very possible that some of these stories may end up becoming chapters of stories. There are a few that I am certain of with this.

- current work in progress-
The Zodiac Chronicles ~ Prelude to Destiny
The Centurions ~ Blood and Loyalty
Her Journey
Boundaries

From Stephen King 'On Writing'

This has to be one of the best remarks I've read on how to approach the act or art writing:

'You can approach the act of writing with nervousness, excitement, hopefulness, or even despair - the sense that you can never completely put on the page what's in your mind and heart. You can come to the act with your fists clenched and your eyes narrowed, ready to kick ass and take down names. You can come to it because you want a girl to marry you or because you want to change the world. Come to it any way but lightly. Let me say it again: you must not come lightly to the blank page.'

malice, stupidity & ignorance

Never attribute to malice that which is adequately explained by stupidity or ignorance. The latter are a lot more common than the former.

Character Types - The Bully

09 August, 2011 - Posted by: Dianne

I work with the mentally unstable bullies in some of my fiction (personal experience with them). They tend to be predictable in their acts, and reactions. You just know, when something goes wrong with one of their plans- the bully will blame some one else. And it's usually the bully’s own undoing. It's comical, sad, and sometimes pathetic all in one.

I deal with a lot of bully issues in my 'mature YA' series The Centurions. Most of the bullies they encounter are fairly harmless- some have the 'get them before they get me' attitude, and others are lashing out because some one is hurting them. These are the 'easy to defuse and repair' scenarios.

And then there's the small handful that surpass reason and explanation. In book 1 of The Centurion Series there's at least 1 bully that turns out to be a sociopath; killing several of the Centurions. The situation comes to a climax when the sociopath targets the wrong people- a cadet at the local military academy, and the sister of another cadet. It's all downhill after that.

And that's all you’re getting out of me... for now.
